Upcoming KWEC events announced
An April day for the birds at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center, a branch of Fort Hays State University's Sternberg Museum of Natural History, will begin with the first-ever 5K Wild Goose Chase and end with a lecture on helping birds.
The 5K, at KWEC, 592 NE K-156 Highway, Great Bend, will begin with registration at 7:30 a.m. The race, beginning at 9 a.m., will take runners through Cheyenne Bottoms and end near the KWEC. A one-mile walk will also be available.
Anyone can participate. Prizes will be awarded in age divisions for men and women. The registration fee is $25 until April 15. The fee is $35 after that, and late registrants are not guaranteed a T-shirt.
To pre-register, go to wetlandscenter.fhsu.edu.
After the Wild Goose Chase, visitors join staff from the Milford Nature Center along with some of their live raptor residents for a fun family program at 11 a.m. in the KWEC auditorium. Participants will get the chance to see a live red-tailed hawk, American kestrel and possibly a turkey vulture. The program is free and open to the public.
"101 Ways to Help Birds," a lecture by Laura Erickson based on her book of the same name, begins at 6:30 p.m. Erickson is producer of the public radio show "For the Birds."
The presentation will be in the Barton County Community College auditorium, 245 NE 30 Road, Great Bend. Cost of the program is $5 at the door and will include light refreshments.
Erickson will cover a wide variety of issues, from the importance of buying federal Duck Stamps to minimizing pesticide use and how consumers can make decisions with bird conservation in mind when choosing food items and consumer products.
Erickson will also explain what to do when individual birds need help, how to figure out the safest ways to solve bird problems and other issues.
