Founded in 1947 by the late Harold G. Palmer, the High Plains Music Camp continues to offer the experience of studying music with outstanding musicians from around the country, for band, string and now voice students.
Students experience a week of stimulating and concentrated study in the art of music under the guidance of nationally recognized musicians, teachers and conductors. Performances, concerts and additional opportunities in recreation and camp social life make the week an experience worth repeating year after year.
Dr. German Gutierrez, professor of music and director of orchestral studies at Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, Texas, and John Fedchock, professional trombonist in New York City, join FHSU faculty in teaching classes.
Each day's schedule is filled with rehearsals, classes, sectionals and ensembles, with time built in for recreation and making new friends.
All campers are enrolled in one daily mini class to refine skills already learned or pick up new skills.
Classes are: Alternative Strings, Conducting, Drum-line Fundamentals, Electric Guitar Class, Flutists Makeover, Jazz Bass Class, Jazz Improvisation, Jazz Piano, Multimedia, Musical Theatre, Double Reed Making, Rhythm Fundamentals, Theory and Ear Training, Camp Choir, String Literature, Sight Reading, History of Composers, and Music Composition.
Each evening features a concert by guest artists, faculty, and campers. For more information, contact Dr. Ivalah Allen, assistant professor of music and theatre and camp director, at 785-628-4226 or ijallen@fhsu.edu.
