Augustfest gets FHSU's new academic year off to a rolling start
August marks a new beginning at Fort Hays State University -- the start of classes, meeting new people, and finding a new home for many students and faculty.
For much of August and into September, the university will celebrate the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year with Augustfest, a series of events, activities, programs and opportunities designed to welcome and introduce people to campus life.
Students can participate in Tiger Impact Orientation events and student organization meetings and attend a variety of picnics, open houses, comedy and music events sponsored by various groups, student organizations and departments across campus.
The big public event of the 2013 celebration is "Mission IMPROVable" at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 16, in the Breach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center hosted by Student Affairs. This show is free and open to the public.
This fast-paced and exciting new form of comedy is a combination of MTV's
"Wild 'N Out" and "Who's Line is it Anyway?" - but there is a bit of a twist. Just like in the old TV series "Mission Impossible," the Chicago actors in Mission IMPROVable pretend to be agents.
The audience members are the co-agents and participate in the theater games or "missions" by yelling out suggestions. The on-the-spot randomness provided by the audience makes each mission truly unique and very often hysterical.
Students can participate in the Big Day Out Service Project hosted by Tigers in Service from 9:30 to 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17. Volunteers will meet at 9:30 a.m. in the Memorial Union Sunset Lounge.
Projects include going through donated clothing for women's shelters with Jana's Campaign, writing letters to overseas troops, handing out posters and save-the-date cards for the Christmas tree auction at Hays Area Children's Center, writing letters to children at St. Jude Research Hospital, and yard work for a group home at the Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas.
The Annual Big Creek Mud Run hosted by the FHSU Wellness Center and Hays Medical Center is from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24. Participants must be 18 years old and sign up by Wednesday, Aug. 21. The fee is $25 to participate. The first wave will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the last wave at 11:30 a.m. Forty participants are allowed per wave.
Steve Buckingham, an American record producer and four-time Grammy winner, will speak on his involvement in the Civil Rights Movement through a creative infusion of music at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 29, in the Fort Hays Ballroom in the Memorial Union.
Buckingham started his career as a rhythm and blues singer in Virginia and went on to make hundreds of records from almost every genre of music. In 1978 Buckingham started his producer career with "I Love The Nightlife" by Alicia Bridges. Since, he has produced records for Tammy Wynette, Merle Haggard, Ray Charles, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Alison Krauss, Nickel Creek and many more. This event is free and open to the public.
Other public events of Augustfest include FHSU athletic events, the Back-to-School Picnic on the Quad, 4-7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 19, and Christian Challenge sand volleyball at Sonic Drive-in, 7-10 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 22.
Freshmen are required to attend four Augusfest events: PlayFair, New Student Orientation, "We Dare You" and floor meetings.
Students will be challenged to be their best version of themselves in an effort to make a positive difference in the world at "We Dare You," from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, in Beach/Schmidt.
