FHSU clay-target shooters win $5,000 at special competition in Delta, Colo.

Members of the Fort Hays State University Shooting Team took first and second at every event at a recent shoot in Delta, Colo. Along with receving high honors, the team also earned $5,000 for the club.
Individual honors went to Damian Giles, North Platte, Neb., graduate student, who received top trap and doubles trap as well as high overall male shooter. Jeremy Denny, Fremont, Neb., sophomore, finished first in the handicap event, and Kendall Hostler, Grand Island, Neb., junior, was high overall female shooter.
The shoot, sponsored and hosted by the Elizabeth Colt Legacy Foundation and the Delta Trap Club, included 15 teams from seven states.
Participants were furnished lunch and a banquet dinner on Saturday as well as a variety of gifts that included polo shirts, tote bags, drink bottles and many Colt merchandise door prizes.
Team members who participated in addition to Denny, Giles and Hostler were Kilee Hutchison, Pratt senior; Cody Martin, Tonganoxie sophomore; Zach McClure, Tescott, senior; Robert Ring, Springfield, Colo., senior; Caitlin Watts, Kingman junior; and Dylan Young, Tonganoxie junior. Hays residents Wilmer and Lorena Kellogg are members of the Elizabeth Colt Legacy Foundation and were involved in organizing the competition.
"We have a strong core of returning participants as well as some highly-touted freshmen who will be joining the team," said Dr. Duane Shepherd, coach.
The shooting team began its fall practice schedule on Aug. 20. Members practice at 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Hays City Sportsmen's Club at the range just west of the Ellis County Landfill. The public is welcome to watch and meet the team members, said Shepherd.
