The University Activities Board, the English Department, and Diversity of Affairs in the Center for Student Involvement will give Fort Hays State University students the opportunity to display their writing skills in the fifth annual Poetry Slam at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, in the Memorial Union's Fort Hays Ballroom.
The event will be hosted by Devin "Egypt" Robinson, actor and activist who discusses subjects such as sex, black history and HIV. An array of Fort Hays State students will read and perform original rhythmic and self-expressive poems as well.
Along with the competition, the office of Diversity of Affairs in the Center for Student Involvement will host a workshop on Monday, Oct. 7. Robinson will also be at the workshop to help students with their poetry.
"If students would like some pointers, tips and expert advice to help them stand out amongst the competition, they must register on TigerLink," said Amber White, coordinator of diversity affairs.
Prospective participants must email sample pieces to the Coordinator of Diversity Affairs, amwhite7@fhsu.edu, before 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28.
