A hundred $100 members seems to the Hays Symphony Guild like a fine way to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Hays Symphony Orchestra. Called "100 @ $100 by 100th," the campaign will shift into musical mode with the orchestra's Pops Concert, "100 Years," at 7:30 p,m., Saturday, Sept. 28, in the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center in Sheridan Hall on the FHSU campus.
The goal is to encourage at least 100 people to join, upgrade or remain at the $100 Patron level of membership.
The Guild commissioned a special piece of music for the Pops Concert: "Hays, America!" by Kansas composer Jeffery Bishop, is a tribute to the energy and bustle of a small plains town at the end of the 19th century.
Ben Cline, chair of the Department of Music and Theatre, said the concert will bring music that has remained popular for the last century.
Other pieces to be performed are "Armed Forces Salute," "Ragtime," "Irving Berlin Medley," "Sousa on Parade," "Trish Trash Polka," Debussy's "Children's Corner," and Stravinsky's "Berceuse and Finale."
The concert will also feature five pieces with the members of the High Plains Barbershop Chorus as special guest artists.
Proceeds go to music scholarships, music rental, honoraria for guest conductors and other artists, participation awards to students, mileage costs for volunteer musicians who drive to Hays for rehearsals and performances, a stipend for Young Artists Competition judges and prize money for the competition, and general operating expenses of the orchestra.
Since 1985, the Hays Symphony Guild has helped fund the orchestra and bring in members from surrounding communities.
The Guild also encourages members to reach out to their friends and family to get a membership as well to experience the music the orchestra can bring to them. Membership is accepted at anytime.
"Because of our strong base of support, we are able to sustain our orchestra and keep presenting the concerts that enrich ourselves and the coming generations of young people," said Dr. Terry Crull, assistant professor of music and theatre and Guild president.
The Guild has seven membership levels:
-- Friend, $25-$49
-- Donor, $50-$99
-- Patron, $100-$249, includes two season tickets
-- Sustainer, $250-$499, includes four season tickets
-- Benefactor, $500 and above, includes six season tickets
-- Concert Sponsor, $1,000-$2,499, includes eight seasons tickets and special recognition at the concert of the sponsor's choice
-- Season Sponsor, $2,500 and above, includes 10 season tickets and recognition at every concert
Season tickets for Patron level or higher include the FHSU Opera.
Membership forms can be obtained by calling the Department of Music and Theatre at 785-628-4258 or by email to tacrull@fhsu.edu. Crull said an alternative method is to send a check, with the desired membership level noted in the memo field, to the Hays Symphony Guild, P.O Box 1591, Hays, KS 67601.
