Brian Sims, a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, will speak on "Activism and Advocacy" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, in the Fort Hays State University Memorial Union Fort Hays Ballroom.
Sim's appearance is part of the Red Flag Campaign, a public awareness campaign to promote the prevention of dating violence on college campuses. It is sponsored by the Center for Civic Leadership, Women's Leadership Project and the office of Diversity Affairs.
Sims is the first openly gay representative in Pennsylvania's House of Representatives and before that was the first openly gay collegiate football captain. He will speak on the importance of equality for all people and will discuss his experience and how he overcame opposition.
In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Sims will also advocate women's rights and gender equality in all aspects of life.
The presentation is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Amber White, coordinator of Diversity Affairs in the Center for Student Involvement, at 785-628-4661.
