The Camino de Santiago, or the Way of St. James, is a pilgrimage that people have been making for over a thousand years, and Fort Hays State University is proud to offer, for the fourth consecutive time, the opportunity for FHSU students to spend Spring Break experiencing the Camino.

The Camino is a historical journey in Spain where the apostle St. James from the Bible is allegedly buried. During the course of the trip, participants will backpack about 150 miles on foot and stay in different hostels along the way. This makes the trip very affordable and promises an authentic view of Europe.

"It was the hardest but most rewarding experience of my life," Noelle Husmann, Kearney, Neb., junior, and past participant in the Spain trip.

"When you push yourself you can do anything. El Camino is not just a trip but for me, and many other pilgrims, it's a personal journey. And by the end you see a side of yourself that you did not realize you had. The simplistic 'vacation' showed me what was important in life--just the necessities. Take it from a pilgrim, El Camino is definitely worth the journey," said Husmann.

Participants in the Spain trip will also enroll in the three-credit-hour class "Topics in Foreign Languages--Camino de Santiago," prior to the trip. Students will learn about the cultural history of the Camino and the Camino's importance today. At the end of the course, students will share their research and experiences on the Camino by doing class presentations and a final paper.

This trip is open to all majors and may be applied towards general electives at FHSU.
