Growing up is difficult, especially under a totalitarian government that has corralled its citizens and banned pop music. This conflict drives "Sonnenalle," a German comedy playing at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 20, in Albertson Hall, room 169. The screening is sponsored by the Fort Hays State University Department of Modern Languages.

The comedy, translated to "Sun Alley," tells the story of teenage life in East Berlin under Soviet rule in the late 1970s. Michael "Micha" Kuppisch and his friends spend their days listening to illegal pop music and staging small rebellions against the German Democratic Republic that controls them.

"Sonnenalle," written by Thomas Brussig and first released in 1999, is in German with English subtitles. The free event is part of the German Film Series, which plays throughout the academic year.
