HAYS, Kan. -- A new book written by Houssain Kettani, director of the Information Systems Engineering Program at Fort Hays State University, presents estimations of past and present Muslim populations around the world from 600 A.D. and predicts the Muslim population up to the 24th century.

"The World Muslim Population, History & Prospect" has geographic models with information from censuses collected by the United Nations on almost every country around the world and extrapolates which percent of the population is Muslim.

The United States was one of the hardest countries to measure, said Kettani. "When countries do not have a national religion, like in the U.S., you cannot gain their religion from the documents, so you have to estimate the Muslim population based on ethnicity."

This technique was also used to find the populations of Muslims before the establishment of national censuses in the 20th century. They also had to rely on historical texts. To predict future populations, Kettani established trends found within the data and carried them into the 24th century.

Kettani wrote "The World Muslim Population" over a span of five years. It is his first book. The book can be used in various disciplines, especially in humanities and social sciences, such as multiculturalism or any classes related to Muslim culture.
