Joe and June Nold, originally from Abilene and Lenora, respectively, have established the Joe and June Nold Scholarship Fund at Fort Hays State University to provide assistance to Dickinson County students who attend FHSU.

The Joe and June Nold Scholarship will be awarded each year to four incoming Dickinson County freshmen in any area of study, each of whom will receive a $1,875 scholarship. The scholarships are fully renewable provided students maintain "satisfactory progress" toward their degrees.

Within four years, if all recipients maintain satisfactory progress, 16 Dickinson County students will be receiving a total of $30,000 in Nold Scholarship money from earnings on an endowed account that has been established at the Dickinson County Community Foundation.

The Nolds met at Fort Hays State, where he received a degree in science and industrial arts in 1962. They married and moved to San Diego, Calif., where June finished her arts degree in liberal studies and went on to teach in California. She later began teaching in Kansas while Joe rose to the position of executive vice president at The Coleman Company in Wichita.

After retiring, they relocated to Joe's hometown of Abilene, where they contribute generously to the community. June served as president of the Arts Council of Dickinson County and Joe served as a county commissioner. They founded the Community Foundation of Dickinson County, and Joe served as chairman of its board of directors.

The couple believes that FHSU is one of the best kept secrets in the state with its excellent value. They established a scholarship to provide youths from their county with the kind of educational opportunities that were afforded them at FHSU.

The scholarships will be available beyond the lives of Joe and June Nold, guaranteeing the opportunity for a quality education for Dickinson County's youth for many years to come.

Four current FHSU freshmen are recipients of Joe and June Nold Scholarships for the 2013-2014 academic year: Alexis Boatright, a Solomon High School graduate; Kiley Crider, Abilene High School; McKenzie Dornbusch, Herington High School; and Ashten Slater, Herington High School.
