The Kansas Center for Innovative Education (KCIE) at Fort Hays State University will host a workshop for teachers and another for aspiring home renovators this spring.

The teacher workshop, conducted by Sara Stroup and Natalie Unruh, instructors in the university's Department of Teacher Education, is "Building Relationships with Families and Partnerships within Communities." The workshop, available for college credit, is intended for early childhood and youth development professionals. It addresses Content Area IV: Families and Communities as stated in the Core Competencies for Early Childhood and Youth Professionals.

"Building Relationships " is from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, on the second floor of Rarick Hall on the FHSU campus. Lunch and refreshments are included in the $90 fee, due by Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014. The Center will also host a workshop series on home renovation. Kris Munsch, assistant professor of applied technology in the university's Institute of Applied Technology, will take a hands-on approach to the renovation process in a series of three workshops. Each of the workshops is available for one hour of college credit. The series is designed for anyone involved or thinking of becoming involved in some type of home renovation.

All three will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at FHSU's Davis Hall. The fee for each is $90 with registration due one week prior to the workshop. To enroll for credit, registration is due two weeks before the event.

"Getting to Know My Home," March 8, is the first in the series. It will examine HVAC systems and consider proper drainage around a home.

"The Home Renovation Process -- Where do I Begin?," the second workshop in the series, April 5, delves into moving from ideas to a step-by-step list of what to do when renovating a home. This workshop includes a visit to a home currently being renovated.

The final installment of the series, "Enough Talking About Houses," April 26, puts participants to work installing a door, replacing a wax ring on a toilet or fixing drainage around a home. A tape measure, safety glasses and pencil are needed.

By completing the home renovation series, attendees will receive a special designation, Five-Pointer Certificate.
