01/21/14
Students involved in Greek life at Fort Hays State University raised more than $900 for local and national philanthropies and worked more than 800 hours of community service in fall 2013.
The FHSU community's two sororities and five fraternities represent 204 university students. Information was self-reported by each chapter president for a report compiled by the Center for Student Involvement. One fraternity and one sorority representing 51 members did not submit information in time to be included in the report.
Members of Greek Life are asked to contribute positively to the larger community through academics, philanthropy, brother and sisterhood, leadership development, and campus involvement.
Altogether, the Greek community performed 857 community service hours during the semester, an average of more than 5.6 hours of service per member.
Individual chapters' total of $927 to various charities averaged about $6.06 per member. Organizations receiving donations included Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation, American Diabetes Foundation, South Dakota Rancher Relief Fund, Herndon Clinic, Delta Zeta Foundation, Operation Christmas Child and Swipe Hunger Banquet.
Eighty-seven percent of fraternity or sorority members are involved in 58 different co-curricular or community organizations, including the Black Student Union, Chemistry Club, Christian Challenge, Encounter, FHSU Athletics, FHSU Band, Order of Omega, SPURS, Student Government Association, Tiger Media Network, University Activities Board, Up 'til Dawn and VIP Student Ambassadors. Thirty-eight Greek community members were on the fall 2013 Deans Honor Roll.
Three students were also recognized for individual achievements. Seth Gooding, Madrid Township, Maine (04966), senior, for the China Undergraduate Research Experience; Josh Doak, Rush, Colo. (80833), senior, for NASPA Rising Star; and Tre Giles, Colorado Springs, Colo. (80911), junior, for NASPA Undergraduate Fellow program.
