The Center for Civic Leadership (CCL) at Fort Hays State University will host a number of events and activities to promote citizen leadership development during March and April.

During spring break, Tigers in Service took 15 students to Estes Park, Colo., to volunteer with the longer-term flood relief efforts as a part of an Alternative Weekend.

The Student Government Association (SGA) and the American Democracy Project (ADP) are joining together to host "Voter Registration Day" from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, in the Memorial Union lobby. The day will be dedicated to registering eligible FHSU students to vote using TurboVote.

The next day, Thursday, March 27, at 7 p.m. in Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center in Sheridan Hall, civil rights activist and freedom rider Diane Nash will share her story of the 1960s civil rights movement and her efforts to end segregation.

A self-defense workshop will be from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, in Cunningham Hall, room 110. Participants will learn defensive tactics to prepare themselves against potentially dangerous situations. The workshop is hosted by The Panhellenic Council, the Department of Health and Human Performance, the Defensive Tactics Club, and the Women's Leadership Project.

Throughout March, the ADP will also host an "Arts and Issues Contest." Students are encouraged to be creative about current political and world issues by creating a piece of artwork, a poem or a song about any current political or world issue. The top three places overall and four category winners will be announced at the Arts and Issues Party at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1, in Cody Commons.

An "American Heroines" display will be in Forsyth Library throughout the month of March. The display is hosted by the Women's Leadership Project.

Tigers in Service and the SGA will host "The Big Event" on Thursday, April 3. "The Big Event" is an annual volunteer program that reaches out to the Hays community to provide them with a helping hand from FHSU students.

On Sunday, April 6, Tigers in Service student volunteers will assist Sternberg Museum in stuffing 10,000 Easter eggs for its annual Easter Egg Hunt from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Sternberg Museum of Natural History, 3000 Sternberg Drive.

The Women's Leadership Project, Global Leadership Project and the Creative Arts Society will host "Rise of the Girl," a week focused on international human rights and gender issues, beginning Monday, April 7, through Thursday, April 10. Events include an international student panel, arts, crafts and a movie.

The Global Leadership Project and the Division of Student Affairs will host "Echoing Green Work On Purpose Training" for FHSU faculty from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Friday, April 11, in Stouffer Lounge.

Partnering with the Kansas Food Bank, Tigers in Service volunteers will help distribute food to Ellis County senior citizens through a project called "Bob Boxes" on Saturday, April 12, at the Heartland Building on Old Highway 40.
