The Science and Mathematics Education Institute at Fort Hays State University is offering five camps on the FHSU campus this summer for elementary and middle school students.
Math + Roller Coasters = Fun camp is June 2 through June 5 from 8 a.m. to noon in Rarick Hall, room 301, for students entering fifth through seventh grades. Students will learn math concepts using roller coasters and will apply the math they learn to create their own roller coasters.
Registration is limited to 24 participants. A registration fee of $60 per camper is due at time of registration. Deadline to register is Friday, May 16.
Explore Engineering Camp, June 9 through June 12, is for students entering second through fifth grades. Registration is limited to 24 participants per session. The morning session is from 9 a.m. to noon and the afternoon session is from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Forsyth Library, room 020. Students will explore different aspects of engineering. Activities are circuits and wiring, catapults, bridges, heating a house, gliders, and 3D printing.
A registration fee of $50 per camper is due at time of registration. Deadline to register is Friday, May 16.
Science Space Camp is June 16 through June 19 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Custer Hall for students entering fifth through seventh grades. The camp introduces students to rocketry and Newton's Laws of Motion. Team projects and experiments are engineering design process, Newton's Laws of motion, nanotechnology, atmospheric properties and rockets.
Participants need to bring a sack lunch and a drink each day.
Registration is limited to 20 participants. A registration fee of $60 per camper is due at time of registration. Deadline to register is Friday, May 16.
STEM Girls Camp is June 15 through June 19 for students entering seventh through ninth grades. This five-day residential camp will immerse girls in the world of engineering through Arduinos-programmable controllers, 3D printing and robotics. Campers will also have the opportunity to work with women in science and engineering.
Registration is limited to 24 participants. A registration fee of $300 per camper is due at time of registration, which includes room and board, food, T-shirt, and materials. Deadline to register is Friday, May 16.
Robotics Adventure Camp is June 23 through June 26 for students entering fifth through eighth grades. Registration is limited to 24 participants per session. The morning session is from 9 a.m. to noon and the afternoon session is from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Forsyth Library, room 020. Campers will learn to design and create different robot builds to solve problems. Using motors, sensors, patience and innovation, teams will complete exploratory missions and searches.
