Roberts and Powers win FHSU SGA elections
04/21/14
Chris Roberts, Salina junior, has been re-elected to a second term as Student Government Association president for the 2014-2015 academic year at Fort Hays State University.
Roberts' running mate, Arin Powers, Mooreland, Okla., junior, was elected vice president. Powers has been involved with SGA for the last two years.
"I look forward to building on the accomplishments made this year," Roberts said.
Roberts and Powers attribute their success to a phenomenal campaign team. "Our campaign team dedicated a lot of time, whether it was talking to classrooms or handing out flyers," said Powers.
"We ran a grassroots campaign. All of our signs, posters and T-shirts were hand-made by FHSU students. We kept it all on campus," said Roberts.
The new president and vice president were elected with 72 percent of the votes.
Brandon Taylor, Greensburg junior and SGA treasurer, ran as the opposing presidential candidate. "They did an excellent job this year and both will continue to work for the best interest of students," said Taylor. "It was awesome to meet with FHSU students and see what their views on issues were. I want to thank everyone for the support."
"Brandon had a lot of great ideas. I have the utmost respect for him," said Roberts.
A total of 502 FHSU students voted. The election was also for student senators and a constitutional amendment to the SGA constitution. The amendment added a virtual college advisory counsel, cut down the number of on-campus SGA members and reserved five seats for candidates who received enough votes but did not get a seat on the senate.
