Fort Hays State University's wind ensemble and choirs will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, in the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center in Sheridan Hall. It will feature the Wind Ensemble, the Fort Hays Singers and the Concert Choir.
"The concert has an international theme in honor of our new president, Dr. Mirta Martin, who was born in Havana, Cuba, and immigrated to the United States," said Dr. Terry Crull, associate professor of music and theatre.
The concert, "In Any Language," will open with the Wind Ensemble, conducted by Dr. Jeff Jordan, associate professor of music and theatre.
The wind ensemble will perform a variety of international selections, including "March: Ramesusu II," composed by Yuuichi Abe, which has never before been heard outside of Japan.
The ensemble will also perform "La Fiesta Mexicana," a Mexican folk song symphony, and "The Star Spangled Banner," arranged by Jordan.
"This year is special because 'The Star Spangled Banner' turns 200 years old," said Jordan.
The choral portion of the concert, conducted by Crull, will feature a mixture of sacred, secular and folk songs in different languages including German, Russian, Japanese, French, Spanish and Latin.
Tickets for the public are $7, senior citizens are $5, and FHSU students with I.D. are free. Tickets can be purchased at the box office in the Dreiling Lobby prior to the performances or by contacting the Department of Music and Theatre at FHSU at 785-628-4533.
