The Plains Elevated Convection at Night, PECAN for short, Weather Research Team will base its research out of Hays this summer.

By collecting data before and during nighttime severe storms, the team hopes to improve forecasting by learning how these storms form and why some become severe.

This meteorology experiment is sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the National Aeronautical and Space Administration, and the Department of Energy.

The team will host an open house on Saturday, May 30, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Hays Regional Airport. Experts in their fields will provide instrument tours, demonstrations and weather balloon launches. The event is free and open to the public.
