HAYS, Kan. -- The second free hearing screening in a series of several conducted by Fort Hays State University graduate students will be performed in Medicine Lodge.

The screening will be from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, at Delta Lodge No. 77, 205 N. Main. No appointment is necessary. Screenings will be conducted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Screenings, sponsored by the Kansas Masonic Foundation, are provided by graduate students from the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders and the FHSU Herndon Clinic.

"The FHSU Herndon Clinic in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders is very fortunate to have recently received a $250,000 grant from the Kansas Masonic Foundation to support adult speech, language and hearing services in western Kansas," said Marcy Beougher, speech-language pathologist and an instructor in the department.

Each site will have four stations, each with an FHSU graduate student providing screenings, supervised by Beougher. Each screening will take approximately 15-20 minutes.

The first screening, in Scott City, was well-attended, said Beougher. "We hope to be back in that area next year with the hope that people will tell their friends and families so we can serve even more individuals."

Twenty-six people were screened in Scott City, and several medical and audiological referrals were made.

"We feel it was a successful event. The Masons of Scott City were very welcoming and helpful, and we at FHSU and the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders feel fortunate to have the opportunity to provide these free services because of the generosity of the Kansas Masonic Foundation," said Beougher.

Beougher and Kori Haberman, communication sciences and disorders graduate assistant, are organizing the hearing screenings.
