HAYS, Kan. -- Students from the eastern Kansas region were recognized at a recent Student Recognition Program in Overland Park for the scholarships they have been awarded by Fort Hays State University for the 2017-18 academic year.

The Overland Park SRP primarily serves students from Allen, Anderson, Atchison, Bourbon, Doniphan, Douglas, Franklin, Johnson, Leavenworth, Linn, Miami and Wyandotte counties. Students from Missouri are also welcome.

Scholarships awarded at the SRPs include Fort Hays State's four ACT-based scholarships: the $3,500 Presidential Award of Distinction, the $2,000 University Scholar Award, the $1,500 Hays City Scholar Award, and the $1,000 Traditions Scholar Award. Academic Opportunity Grants of $2,000 or $4,000 are also funded by Fort Hays State.

All are awarded only to incoming freshmen enrolling in college for the first time, but each is renewable provided students maintain the minimum required academic standing.

The renewable $1,500 FHSU Transfer Student Scholarship is available for transfer students, as is a $1,000 non-renewable transfer scholarship. One-time $900 or $500 Academic Opportunity Awards are given to scholars by individual academic departments.

Each SRP event also features four scholarship drawings -- a $400 FHSU Student Recognition Program Scholarship, two $600 FHSU University Bookstore scholarships, and another for an iPad.

The Overland Park program also features drawings for two $150 FHSU Tiger Scholar Awards from the Eastern Kansas Region FHSU Alumni Association chapter.

Students are arranged alphabetically by high school or junior college with their parents and intended majors. Cutlines are provided for the photos.

Basehor-Linwood High School
Derrik Garner, Basehor (66007), a 2017 Basehor-Linwood High School graduate, was awarded a $500 Academic Opportunity Award in criminal justice. Garner, son of Richard and Denise Garner, Basehor, plans to major in justice studies.

Blue Valley High School
Skyler Jones, Overland Park (66223), a 2017 Blue Valley High School graduate, was awarded a $3,500 Presidential Award of Distinction and a $900 Academic Opportunity Award in history. Jones, son of Sue Jones, Overland Park, and Fowler Jones, Prairie Village, plans to major in history.

Bonner Springs High School
Madison Akins, Bonner Springs (66012), a 2017 Bonner Springs High School graduate, was awarded a $1,000 Traditions Scholar Award. Akins, daughter of Rose Billings, Bonner Springs, plans to major in biology.

F.L. Schlagle High School
Alberto Bernardino, Kansas City (66104), a 2017 F.L. Schlagle High School graduate, was awarded a $2,000 Access to Academic Opportunity Grant and a $500 Academic Opportunity Award in justice studies. Bernardino, son of Letticia Cervantes and Juan Carlos Maldonado, Kansas City, plans to major in justice studies.

Fort Scott Community College
Barrett Young, Paola (66071), a 2014 Young Family Homeschool and Family Christian Academy graduate and a Fort Scott Community College transfer student, was awarded a $1,500 FHSU Transfer Student Scholarship. Young, son of Wayne and Dee Young, Paola, plans to major in history.

Gardner-Edgerton High School
Ashley Firth, Olathe (66061), a 2017 Gardner-Edgerton High School graduate, was awarded a $1,500 Hays City Scholar Award and a $500 Academic Opportunity Award in nursing. Firth, daughter of Taunia Ross, Olathe, plans to major in nursing.
