HAYS, Kan. -- Eleven members of the Fort Hays State University Tigers in Service hosted its annual alternative spring break in Des Moines, Iowa, to work with the Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity on a variety of projects.

The trip was organized through Habitat for Humanity's Collegiate Challenge program.

FHSU students worked on construction and Rock the Block crews. The construction crew worked on major landscaping around a home laying sod, planting flowers and trees, and laying rock. The group also worked in the snow, when an unexpected snowfall hit the area.

Students and the Rock the Block crew scraped paint off primed homes, to prepare for an annual paint-a-thon event in April.

The team also spent a day constructing a stoop and deck for two other homes to bring their home entrances up to code.

Each student contributed 28 service hours over the break, and together worked on six homes.

Alternative break trips are hosted by Tigers in Service twice per academic year, once over winter break, and once over spring break.

Depending on the location and cost of accommodations, Tigers in Service takes from 10-20 students. The trips are planned by the two student coordinators using funding from the Student Government Association.
