HAYS, Kan. -- Brena Alexander, a graduating senior from Coldwater, has been awarded Fort Hays State University's Cecile LaSalle Beougher Potential for Excellence in Teaching Award.
The $750 award, from the College of Education, was presented by Elton Beougher in memory of his wife, Cecile, to recognize the potential for teaching excellence among elementary education majors at FHSU. The funds are intended to purchase teaching materials for advanced education or professional development, or to be used at the discretion of the recipient.
The award, first presented in 1994, is named for Cecile Beougher, a teacher with a distinguished career in the Hays school system. Beougher, a Decatur County native, graduated from FHSU and taught in Monument and Winona before moving to the USD 489 school system in 1971. She taught kindergarten for 23 years and received the Presidential Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics in 1990.
Alexander graduated from FHSU this spring with a B.S. in health and human performance and a B.S. in secondary education.
