Splash Zone water science event coming to KWEC

HAYS, Kan. - Wetlands, such as Cheyenne Bottoms, are some of the most biodiverse ecosystems on earth. To celebrate and educate the community about the significance of these natural wonders, the Kansas Wetlands Education Center will host a Splash Zone of water science learning stations on Jan. 20 from 1 to 2 p.m.
Presented by the 4-H Water Ambassador team, this event promises a variety of water-themed activities designed for all ages. The 4-H Water Ambassadors, a group of teens from Barton and Ellis County, are dedicated to fostering awareness about the importance of water and water quality in their communities.
The 4-H Water Ambassadors, in collaboration with the KWEC, the city of Hays, K-State Research and Extension Cottonwood District, and Big Creek and Middle Smoky Hills Watersheds, are looking forward to sharing their knowledge with the community. This event serves as a platform for these teens to showcase their learning and leadership skills while emphasizing the importance of water conservation.
This free and family-friendly event is for ages 3-14 and will allow everyone to learn and have fun. Bring your curiosity and enthusiasm to the Splash Zone, where water science comes to life.

Location: Kansas Wetlands Education Center, 10 miles northeast of Great Bend on Hwy K-156
Activities:
- Explore wetland critters, including baby dragonflies, blood worms, and crayfish.
- Build a water filter and learn hands-on water science techniques.
- Discover the unique diversity of life in the marsh through engaging presentations.
- Meet Freddy the Fish and understand the impact of pollution on aquatic habitats.
- Make an edible soil snack and participate in a creative M&M graphing activity to understand threats to water quality.
