Kaplan Nursing Admissions Test (KNAT) Information
Scheduling an Appointment
Testing Services administers the KNAT by appointment Monday through Friday. To schedule an appointment, contact our office at least two weeks prior to a preferred test date. For optimum availability, you are encouraged to test well in advance of the FHSU Nursing Department's application deadline. Please note that KNAT testing at FHSU is available only to applicants to the FHSU Nursing program.
Test Administration Fee: $35 payable on the day of the test by cash or check only. Credit and debit cards are not accepted for payment.
Qualifications
You must be referred for testing by your FHSU Nursing Department advisor. Your advisor will provide you with a completed and signed "Kaplan Nursing Admissions Test (KNAT) Information and Referral Form." The form expires 120 days after it has been signed by your advisor.
Test Day Requirements
You must bring your signed referral form, current government-issued photo identification (e.g. driver's license, passport, state identification card), the required test administration fee, and your Kaplan account username and password to your test appointment. (Specific instructions for creating a Kaplan account will be provided on the referral form.)
Overview of the Test
The test consists of four sections with a total of 91 questions. The total test time is 165 minutes (2 hours, 45 minutes). You should expect the test appointment to last approximately 3 hours (check-in, administrative procedures, testing time, review of scores).
Reading
22 questions (45 minutes)
You will read four passages and answer questions that measure the essential skills required for reading:
- Determining the logic of a passage
- Comprehending details
- Drawing basic inferences
- Identifying the purpose of a passage
Math
28 questions (45 minutes)
An onscreen calculator is provided. No personal calculators are allowed.
The test will measure your ability to apply mathematical principles in the following areas:
- Conversions
- Operations
- Ratios
- Word problems
Writing
21 questions (45 minutes)
You will read nine passages and answer questions that measure the essential skills required for writing:
- Assessing passage development
- Assessing paragraph logic
- Assessing mechanics of writing
Science
20 questions (30 minutes)
This will measure your knowledge of physiology in the following areas:
- Cardiovascular system
- Electrolytes
- Gastrointestinal system
- Immune system
- Nervous system
- Renal system
- Hematological system
- Homeostasis
- Respiratory system
- Sensory system
Score Information
Minimum score requirements are established by the FHSU Department of Nursing. Please contact your advisor to get information on required scores and interpretation of your results.
Official Score Results
After the exam, you will be able to view your results immediately. You will also be able to access your results at any time by logging in to your Kaplan account. Testing Services will notify the Nursing Department that you have taken the exam. It is your responsibility to ensure that your FHSU Nursing Department application file is complete.
Preparing for the Test
Kaplan recommends the preparatory book titled Nursing School Entrance Exams Prep: Your All-in-One Guide to the Kaplan and HESI Exams - Tenth Edition. This book is available on Amazon.com and provides preparation for both the KNAT and HESI. You should concentrate on the areas listed for the KNAT and study for three to four weeks.
