Accelerated Master's Degree in ESOL
The Accelerated MSE in English for Speakers of Other Languages is only available to current FHSU juniors and seniors in bachelor's degree programs offered through the Department of Teacher Education. Others interested in this content should pursue the standard MSE in English for Speakers of Other Languages.
This accelerated degree program allows certain undergraduate students at FHSU to gain early admission to the MSE program while still a junior or senior. Those admitted to this option will take the following three graduate courses while still an undergraduate:
- AEP 880 - Cultural Diversity (3 credits)
- ESOL 883 - Assessment & Appraisal (3 credits)
- ESOL 884 - Methods & Materials (3 credits)
All three classes are offered (online only) in each the fall, spring, and summer semesters. Admitted students should work with their advisors to determine the semesters most appropriate to take these graduate courses before student teaching. These 9 credits fulfill both the required electives in the undergraduate degree and count as 9 credits of the required courses in the MSE graduate program. Upon graduation with their bachelor's degrees, students will simply continue in the MSE graduate program.
Upon completion of these 9 credits and a bachelor's degree that has resulted in Kansas teacher licensure, students qualify for provisional endorsement in ESOL. After completion of the master's degree with a culminating field experience and successfully passing the Praxis examination, graduates are eligible for their full endorsement in ESOL through the State of Kansas. The MSE in ESOL is accredited by the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). For more information, please see Licensure Disclosure.
