Hands-On Learning in Allied Health
Imaging fields are clearly hands-on professions. While it is critical to learn the science and theory of a discipline, it is important that you have ample opportunities to put the science and theory into action. Here are just a few of the ways that you will learn by performance at Fort Hays State University.
Year-Long Clinical Experiences
A consecutive year of clinical experience is designed to develop each student’s skills in both the Radiologic Technology and Diagnostic Medical Sonography Programs. Students will receive one-on-one supervision and guidance as they perfect their patient care and imaging abilities at our clinical sites situated throughout the state of Kansas and eastern Colorado.
Small Class Sizes
Allied Health students work inside the imaging labs with up-to-date equipment at all times and have a nearly 100% pass rate on national certification examinations within the department. With small class sizes, the personal attention is ideal. The trust a smaller university can offer comes into play as imaging students are able to access the labs outside of class time to practice or study.
Excellent Facilities and Equipment
The x-ray labs consist of three radiography lab rooms with operational equipment that allow all students to receive hands-on experience. The radiographic phantoms are available for students to use when practicing procedures. The actual height and weight of a human, Pixie is the best option on the market for use with x-ray. Three mammography units, over ten ultrasound units, three x-ray machines, exposure labs, and a patient care simulation mannequin provide for excellent lab settings at FHSU.
Preceptorships
MDI program preceptorships can provide you additional experience in specific modalities including: Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Cardiovascular Interventional Technology (CVIT), or PACS Administration.
