Department of Geosciences - Scholarship Opportunities
The Department of Geosciences has scholarships available for both incoming freshmen and continuing students. To apply for these scholarships, and others, complete FHSU online Scholarship Application. The scholarships listed below have been awarded regularly in recent years, but there are others that are awarded sporadically (i.e., as funds allow). Unless otherwise noted, the final deadline for all scholarships is 15 February (priority deadline is 15 November). All scholarship amounts are estimates that are subject to donor wishes and available funds.
UNDERGRADUATE
GENERAL GEOSCIENCES
- Cheryl Helget Memorial Scholarship
The recipient of this scholarship shall be an undergraduate, on-campus student of junior or senior classification and maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher. The recipient must be majoring in one of the following disciplines at FHSU: Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Geosciences, or Engineering. The recipient must have graduated from a western Kansas high school (west of Highway 281) and cannot have received this scholarship previously. In addition, each applicant will need to submit to the selection committee a short explanation (100 words or less) about why he/she chose their specific major. - City of Hays Stormwater Division Scholarship
Geosciences majors pursuing a field of study which will qualify for a career in a field related to water pollution control are eligible. Recipient must be a Geosciences major (Geology or Geography) and have taken or is enrolled in one of the following courses: GSCI 605 Principles of Geomorphology, GSCI 627 Karst Geology, GSCI 635 Hydrology and Water Resources, and GSCI 640 Aqueous Environmental Geochemistry. Preference will be given to students with a 3.25 or higher cumulative GPA and who has taken multiple courses that can be related to a future water pollution control career. - Department of Geosciences Majors Scholarship
All Geosciences majors are eligible. Recipient must be a Geosciences major (Geology or Geography) with a 3.0 minimum cumulative GPA who show initiative in geosciences. Available funds will be divided and awarded based on the recommendations of the faculty Scholarship Committee. - Department of Geosciences Scholarship for Kansas Students
Recipient must be a Geosciences major at FHSU who is a graduate of a Kansas High School and who show financial need. First preference to incoming freshmen. Available funds will be divided and awarded based on the recommendations of the faculty Scholarship Committee. - Department of Geosciences Underrepresented Scientists Scholarships
Scholarships available for women, minorities, persons with disabilities, and all other groups that have traditionally been underrepresented in geosciences. Recipients must be a Geosciences major at FHSU in good academic standing and meet the individual scholarship requirements. Available funds will be divided and awarded based on the recommendations of the faculty Scholarship Committee. - Elgin & Freda Denio Physical & Life Science Scholarship
Applicants must be residents of the state of Kansas and must be majoring in one of the following areas: Physics, Chemistry, Geology, or Biology. A first preference will be shown for students who intend to pursue a teaching career. - Northwest Kansas Learn and Live Scholarship
The Northwest Kansas Learn and Live Scholarship has been established to provide educational assistance to Fort Hays State University students who aspire to work and live in Northwest Kansas, specifically the 26-county Hansen Foundation service area (particularly the rural communities outside of Hays and Salina). Recipients can be undergraduate or graduate students, on-campus or virtual students. The scholarship is available to students who are: Registered in an academic program of study that has been identified as a priority area for meeting the needs of the rural communities that make up the Hansen Foundation service area including geosciences. Each applicant must provide a letter of application indicating desire to live and work in a rural community in the Hansen Foundation service area upon graduation (250 words max), a letter of support from a Fort Hays State University faculty member supporting your intent to live and work in a rural community in the Hansen Foundation service area upon graduation, Letter of support from a regional employer stating intent to provide employment upon graduation. - Tamko Building Products Inc Scholarship
Recipient must be full-time junior or senior student at Fort Hays State University who is a graduate of a high school within 100 miles of Phillipsburg KS and maintains a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale.
Recipient must be majoring in biology; chemistry; physics; geosciences; mathematics; technology studies; informatics; economics; finance and accounting; or leadership studies. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need and who have completed an internship with TAMKO.
GEOLOGY
- David M. Schumaker Geology Scholarship (10 @ $1500)
The David M. Shumaker Geology Scholarship was created to honor David M. Shumaker. Funding for the scholarship has been provided by an anonymous donor through an endowed fund. The purpose of this scholarship is to assist students who plan to pursue a career in the gas and oil industry. Recipients of this scholarship must be a Geosciences major studying Petroleum Geology with plans to pursue a career in the gas and oil industry. Preference will be given to students showing initiative and leadership and work to their potential academically and who show financial need. - Downing-Nelson Scholarship (2 @ $2000)
Recipient of this scholarship must be a full-time Geosciences major studying Petroleum Geology with a GPA of 2.5 or better. Recipient must have passed at least 18 credits of the geology "core" courses and at least 8 credits of the geology "cognate" courses. Preference given to junior or senior students - Farmer Family Petroleum Geology Excellence Scholarship (4 @ $2500)
Recipients of this scholarship must be full-time in-state student Geosciences major studying Petroleum Geology and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. Recipients must have completed a minimum of 60 credit hours by the end of the spring semester in which the award is made. - John & Nancy Francis Scholarship (1 @ $700)
Recipient must be a full-time Geosciences major studying Petroleum Geology with a GPA of 2.5 or better. Recipient may be registered on-campus or online. Preference given to junior or senior students. - Trilobite Testing Geology Scholarship (1 @ $2000)
Recipient must be a full-time Geosciences major studying Petroleum Geology with a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or better. Recipient must be a classified as a sophomore, junior, or senior.
GEOGRAPHY
- Dr. John Heinrichs Memorial Geography Scholarship
The Dr. John Heinrichs Memorial Geography Scholarship is funded through memorial gifts and other contributions made by friends, family, and former students of Dr. Heinrichs. The purpose of this fund is to honor the memory of Dr. Heinrichs and to provide support for a full-time undergraduate student pursuing a degree in Geography who is interested in research and meets scholarship criteria. Preference give to students with a GPA in the 2.3-3.3 range. The intent is to assist academically average students, as opposed to excellent students, so that they might be able to work less hours and devote more time to study and research.
SPECIALTY/ACTIVITY SCHOLARSHIPS
- Christopher Schmid Geology Scholarship (based on available funds)
Recipient must be a junior or senior Geosciences major studying geology with a GPA of 2.0 or better and financial need. Preference will be given to students registered in GSCI 454 Field Studies in Geology (Field Camp) - Dr. Kenneth Neuhauser Field Camp Scholarships
(available funds split evenly between all qualified applicants)
Recipients must be registered in GSCI 454 Field Studies in Geology (Field Camp) with a minimum GPA of 2.0 and in good academic standing. Scholarship dependent upon completion of summer field camp course with passing grade. - Longpine Field Camp Scholarships
(available funds split evenly between all qualified applicants, not to exceed $1000 per student)
Recipient(s) must be registered in GSCI 454 Field Studies in Geology (Field Camp) in good academic standing. Scholarship dependent upon completion of summer field camp course with passing grade.
GRADUATE
GEOLOGY
- Caprez Family Geology Scholarship (1 @ $1000)
Recipient must be a graduate student pursing an M.S. in Geosciences (Geology) and be a US citizen with a GPA of 3.25 or better. First preference to students who are from western Kansas (west of Highway 81 and I-35) and whose thesis relates to hydrology.
Other Funding Opportunities
The Department of Geosciences encourages all students to participate in research, professional travel, and other experiences that enhance the university experience. We try to offer extra funds to students participating in such opportunities. These funds may be reimbursable or in the form of paid transportation, lodging, etc. The best way to take advantage of these opportunities is to communicate regularly with Geosciences faculty and be involved in the Department.
