Department Admission Requirements
New DEPARTMENT ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
To be admitted to the graduate program in History, a student must meet the following criteria:
Applicant has a bachelor’s degree
- A bachelor's degree of any concentration with satisfactory performance in a minimum of 18 hours of history courses. A historical/research methods class or equivalent is required.
- Two letters of recommendation.
- A writing sample demonstrating research, higher level writing, and documentation skills.
- A personal statement. If possible, please indicate the course(s) in which you did formal research and writing.
- A 3.00 GPA on a 4.00 scale on last 60 credit hours; or a 2.50-2.99 GPA for last 60 credit hours and applicant must attain a B or better in first 6 hours of graduate coursework at FHSU.
- Students who do not meet these basic requirements may be admitted to the graduate program, but they MUST remove any deficiencies in their undergraduate preparation as soon as possible. All work to clear up deficiencies will not count toward the total hours for the M.A. degree.
- Any exceptions requires approval of the department Chair.
Applicant has an advanced degree (M.A., M.F.A., Ph.D., J.D. etc.)
- A graduate degree in any concentration with satisfactory performance in a minimum of 9 hours of history courses in their bachelors and/or previous graduate coursework.
- Two letters of recommendation.
- A writing sample from the completed graduate program. Ideally, a research paper/thesis or similar document from a culminating experience that demonstrates research and writing abilities at the graduate student level.
- A personal statement.
- A 3.00 GPA on a 4.00 scale on the last 60 credit hours; or a 2.50-2.99 GPA for the last 60 credit hours and applicant must attain B or better in first 6 hours of graduate coursework at FHSU.
- Students who do not meet these advanced degree requirements may be admitted to the graduate program, but they MUST remove any deficiencies in their preparation as soon as possible. All work to clear up deficiencies will not count towards the total hours for the M.A. degree at FHSU.
- Any exceptions requires approval of the department chair.
