Community Interpreting and Translating
The Department of English and Modern Languages follows a practical application of language in critical and real professional settings. Given the shifting demographics in the U.S. it is important to attend to the needs of cultural and linguistic minorities. To address the linguistic needs of Hispanics in the Hays area, the Department of English and Modern Languages plans to offer community interpreting and translation services.
What is community interpreting?
Community interpreting is interpreting that facilitates access to community services. It includes medical, mental-health, educational, social services, and faith-based interpreting. (Bancroft et al., 2015)
Our goal is two-fold. With the proposed service, we seek to tackle the cultural and linguistic barriers between Hispanics and the Hays community. Also, our service aims to provide students with opportunities to apply the linguistic and cultural knowledge acquired in class and serve the community.
We plan to offer this service free of charge to the local community upon review and acceptance of the assignment taking into consideration that the project is not for profit. We will offer services according to the FHSU academic calendar (January to April and August to November). Off-season assignments will be considered depending on student and faculty availability.
