Launching in Fall 2023, Tiger Money Mentors was awarded start-up funds from the Innovation & Entrepreneurship Grant by President Mason. Many young adults lack the financial knowledge and skills necessary to manage their personal finances. College students, in particular, struggle with financial stress and the decision to work more hours versus taking more credit hours toward their degree. Furthermore, almost 75% of Americans get their financial advice from TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook – without knowing if that information is accurate.
Tiger Money Mentors is a new and necessary student resource designed to provide FHSU students with free financial guidance from trained peer financial counselors. The Money Mentors are available to meet one-on-one with students who have questions about their personal finances, as well as to provide group financial education to student organizations and classes on specific financial topics, such as budgeting, student loan debt, credit cards, evaluating job offers, and making a financial plan for college and beyond. This program not only benefits the students seeking counseling, but also provides the trained Money Mentors with experience working one-on-one with clients and public speaking.
