Transition to College
Our faculty mentors recognize the many challenges our students face during the transition to college. We do not want our students to feel they are facing any of these challenges alone - we are here to help! We encourage students to reach out to us with any questions or concerns, so we can help to get our students headed in the right direction and onto the pathway for success.
Social
The social aspect of beginning college can be exciting, yet quite intimidating. One of the best things a student can do once arriving at college is to get out of the dorm room, jump right in, and introduce yourself to those around you while attending the many events occurring on campus and in the community.
Student Engagement offers a wide variety of resources to help the student acclimate to FHSU. There are more than 125 recognized student organizations offered, so you are sure to find one that suits you.
Student organizations offered in Allied Health include the Association of Radiologic Technology Students (ARTS) as well as the Society of Student Sonographers (SSS), both of which are available to pre-program and program students.
Engaging and becoming involved in the community helps the student to feel more connected and take ownership in their role in the local area. There are many volunteer opportunities available to help on campus and in the community. The Hays Chamber, which is off campus yet works closely with the university, coordinates an updated page of events planned in the community.
Health and Wellbeing
Adjusting to a new schedule and lifestyle is a challenge for all who begin the transition to college. To help you reach your personal, academic, and professional goals, there are many resources available to help you stay healthy (mentally, emotionally, and physically) during your time at FHSU.
Health and Wellness Services is available to help students stay healthy and prepared to meet new challenges that can present when in college. They offer supportive counseling and accessibility services, as well as affordable medical services to students.
Tiger Fitness Center is housed in Cunningham Hall (also home to Allied Health!) with a wide range of equipment and group fitness classes offered free of charge to FHSU students.
The Department of Campus Intramurals and Recreational Sports (neighbors to our DMS lab in Cunningham Hall!) offers something for everyone. Intramurals are a great opportunity for students to stay active while also socializing and forming friendships.
Educational
The college courses offered at FHSU can present difficulties to students that they may not have encountered previously in their educational careers. Especially once students are taking department-specific courses, we recognize students are likely to encounter new challenges that may be relative to a change in course pace, rigor, and expectations. This will require the student to adapt to this pace and rigor to be successful in these programs and in this career field.
FHSU offers free tutoring services to students to help with most General Education courses including math, science, foreign language, English, as well as other subjects.
For help with classes specific to our department, we strongly encourage students to reach out to the instructor of the course with any questions or assistance you may need. We want to help you achieve your academic goals and are happy to set up a time to meet with you!
For any questions regarding Blackboard, Workday, and other technology platforms, there are departments and resources available to students to assist with any difficulties.
Financial
We recognize the financial stress attending college can put on a student and their family. There are several resources available at FHSU that help students and their families with the financial responsibilities associated with college.
The Financial Aid Office awards millions in loans, grants, scholarships, and employment funding from university, federal, state, and private sources. Contact their office for help with the application and awarding process of financial aid.
Be sure to apply by the listed deadlines for scholarships that are offered by FHSU and private donors. There are departmental opportunities including scholarships and degree-specific low-interest loans as funds are available.
Student Fiscal Services provides financial and administrative services to students and parents. Contact their office for help with the financial aid disbursement, billing, and refund process.
There are many opportunities for FHSU students to work part-time whether it be on campus or in the community. Career Services provides a variety of resources including assistance with resumes, cover letters, and interviewing. There is even a clothing closet available for free to FHSU students who need professional clothing for interviews, business presentations, career fairs, or other professional activities. For on-campus job opportunities, contact the Student Employment Office.
