How to Receive Veteran's Educational Benefits
In order to take advantage of veteran's benefits, it is important to understand the required processes and procedures. Listed below are key questions and answers that can help you better understand the requirements for receiving benefits.
Important Note! All students who are receiving either Montgomery GI Bill®, Active duty or Selected Reserve MUST verify their enrollments monthly to receive payments. This verification can be done either by using the Web Automated Verification of Enrollment (WAVE) application or by using the automated telephone system (TVR) at 1-877-823-2378 and following the prompts. (Post 9/11 is now included in this requirement)

1. How do I apply for Montgomery GI Bill® (Chapter 30 or Chapter 1606) educational benefits?
Students who have not previously received benefits through this program, must complete an initial application form 22-1990-VON-App online, and submit it along with the member-4 copy of the dd-214 (discharge papers) to the Department of Veteran's Affairs in St. Louis, MO. In addition, each semester you must complete the FHSU Veteran's Class Schedule online. The Department of Veteran's Affairs estimates 60-90 days for the processing of initial applications.

2. How do I apply for the Post 9/11 Montgomery GI Bill® Chapter 33 educational benefits?
Students must complete the form 22-1990-VON-App online, and submit it to the Department of Veteran's Affairs in St. Louis, MO. In addition, each semester you must complete the FHSU Veteran's Class Schedule online. FHSU will certify your hours for that semester, and then after add/drop period request the actual tuition and fees amount. If you are utilizing this benefit you must submit a copy of your Certificate of Eligibility showing your percentage of benefit to the Financial Assistance Office. The Department of Veteran's Affairs estimates 60-90 days for the processing of initial applications.

3. How do I apply for Montgomery GI Bill® (Chapter 35) educational benefits?
Students who have not previously received benefits through this program, must complete an initial application form 22-5490-VON-App online, and submit it to the Department of Veteran's Affairs in St. Louis, MO. In addition, each semester you must complete the FHSU Veteran's Class Schedule online. The Department of Veteran's Affairs estimates 60-90 days for the processing of initial applications. If this is the first time for FHSU certifying your hours we will also need to know the First and Last Name of the veteran in order to certify your classes.

4. Once I am receiving my Educational Benefits through Fort Hays State University, what do I need to do for these to continue?
For each semester that you would like to use your educational benefits, you must complete a new FHSU Veteran's Class Schedule online and submit it to our office.

5. I am going to be changing my major, do I need to report this to the Department of Veteran's Affairs?
No. When you change your major, the Certifying Official will automatically report this change to the Department of Veteran's Affairs.

7. How much will my educational benefit checks be?
This will vary, and is based on the Chapter that you are receiving benefits through, as well as the number of credit hours that you are registered in each semester. To find out what amount you may be eligible for, go to the Department of Veteran's Affairs Web site or call 1-888-442-4551.
