Dr. Emily Chapman joins Fort Hays State University as the Assistant Professor of Music Education after recently earning her PhD in Music with a specialization in Music Education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She also holds a Master’s degree in Vocal Performance from Baylor University and dual Bachelor’s degrees in Music Education and Music (Vocal Performance) from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
With a decade of teaching experience in Arizona, Dr. Chapman has a diverse background in music education. She spent eight years at a K-8 charter school, where she taught general music, choir, and musical theatre, and led various choral and musical clubs. Following this, she dedicated two years to a public middle school, focusing on middle school choir and musical theatre, and even took on the additional responsibility of advising the yearbook during the pandemic.
Dr. Chapman is delighted to join the FHSU team and is excited to begin working with the music and general education students within the teacher education program. Her research interests include music teacher preparation, preservice mentor motivation and experiences, choral music education in rural communities, and the adolescent music experience.
In addition to her academic and teaching responsibilities, Dr. Chapman enjoys adjudicating for choral and vocal festivals, contests, and clinics, particularly for middle and high school students from small, rural schools.
When she is not teaching, singing, or playing the ukulele, Dr. Chapman enjoys hiking with her small standard poodle, Gimli, as well as biking and horseback riding.
