Credit by Examination
FHSU Exams:
These exams are administered by the FHSU department offering the course.
Advanced Standing for Credit (ASC) (Local, departmental, or challenge exams)
A fee of $25 per credit hour attempted will be charged. All CPL policies apply.
Exams may take the form of a traditional test, a project/activity, or other work as determined by the department. The student should present the contact with a reason the student believes s/he have knowledge of the course material.
National Exams:
These are exams administered by organizations outside of FHSU. Students will typically pay a fee to the testing organization & the testing center where they take the test. Students must then have scores sent to FHSU. All CPL policies apply. Typically no fee is paid to FHSU – Testing Services will charge a test administration fee if taken at FHSU.
Advanced Placement (AP)
The university cooperates with high schools offering courses in the Advanced Placement Program of the College Entrance Examination Board. Students who have completed College Board Advanced Placement Tests should have a report of the scores sent to the Office of the Registrar. The university accepts scores of 5, 4, or 3 on selected examinations and assigns credit according to this articulation chart. Students considering an AP test and desiring a way to learn more about the subject may want to look at the materials produced by modernstates.org. This resource provides access to sample classes, but the only way to receive college credit is to pass an accepted AP examination.
International Baccalaureate (IB)
FHSU offers credit for some IB courses. The program is classified as credit by documentation.
College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) is a national credit-by-examination program that enables students to demonstrate a level of achievement and competency for the purpose of obtaining university credit. CLEP tests are designed to measure the extent of knowledge a student has already acquired and to reward it by awarding university credit. Students should contact the Testing Services Office for information on test appointments, requirements, and cost. The national CLEP Web site maintains comprehensive information on the CLEP testing program including testing centers other than FHSU. A list of official CLEP policies at FHSU is available on the CLEP Credit Policy Chart. Students considering the CLEP test and desiring a way to learn more about the subject may want to look at the materials produced by modernstates.org. This resource provides access to sample classes, but the only way to receive college credit is to pass an accepted CLEP examination. Modernstates.org may also provide funds for the test if you complete the study resource.
DSST Exams (formerly Dantes Subject Standardized Test)
DSST exams provide an opportunity for students to obtain college credit for what they have learned in non-traditional ways. Designed originally for the military, DSSTs are available to civilian students and adult learners as well. The DSST program is used by colleges and universities to award college credit to those who demonstrate that they have knowledge comparable to someone who completed the classroom course in the subject. Students should contact the Testing Services Office for information on test appointments, requirements, and cost. The national DSST Web site maintains comprehensive information on the DSST testing program. A list of official DSST policies at FHSU is available on the DSST Credit Policy Chart.
Uexcelsior Examinations
Uexcel exams from Excelsior College (formerly ACT PEP and Regents College). Registered students may attempt Excelsior examinations. Excelsior transcripts should be sent to the Registrar’s Office and are processed as transfer hours. Students would need to discuss with the FHSU department offering the course if these transfer courses satisfy specific courses at FHSU. Excelsior College Exams (Nursing) are not accepted.
American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL)
The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) offers Oral Proficiency Interviews (OPI or OPIc) in a number of languages that are not taught at FHSU (No credit is given for Spanish, French, German, or Chinese). If a student has achieved considerable proficiency through study or experience outside of the university, the registered student can receive credit - a "CR" grade recorded on the transcript - for successful completion of an examination in one of these languages. However, no credit is awarded for an examination in the English language nor for a course that is a prerequisite for a course previously passed. A student who completes the ACTFL OPI with a score of "Novice High" or higher can receive 5 hours of credit for MLNG 199, Transfer Credit in Foreign Languages; and if the student receives a score of "Intermediate Mid" or higher the student can receive credit for 10 total hours, or two sections of MLNG199, Transfer Credit in Foreign Languages. Students may earn multiple courses if they obtain qualifying tests in multiple languages provided the languages are distinct languages and not dialects of the same language - as determined by FHSU. Students should request a report be sent direct from LTI and ensure the language earned is listed.
The ACTFL Web site maintains comprehensive information on the ACTFL testing program and Language Testing International is the exclusive testing provider. Students who have taken the OPI must request an official score report that shows both the level achieved and the language tested. ACE may not report the language.
Cambridge International Exams
Cambridge International Exams may be granted credit. Exams that have been evaluated may be viewed on the CI Exam credit articulation page.
