Credit for Prior Learning Policies
The following policies apply to all CPL credit:
- Student must be a degree-seeking student and currently registered in courses before credit is evaluated and recorded.
- CPL credit must be equivalent to FHSU classes and apply to the degree sought.
- Courses will be recorded with the grade “CR”. These courses do not count in GPA calculations.
- Courses recorded as CPL credit (CR) do not count toward the 30 hours of graded coursework that must be passed at FHSU for a bachelor's degree. A certificate requires 6 hours passed at FHSU and an associate degree requires 15 hours passed at FHSU.
- CPL credit will not be granted for a course if an audit, grade, or an incomplete has been received at FHSU or a transfer institution. [Appeal available]
- Credits earned through CPL may not be accepted in all degree programs: It is the student’s responsibility to check with an advisor or the department if changing majors to determine if previously earned CPL credit applies.
- Credit earned through CPL may not transfer to other institutions: It is the student’s responsibility to check with the institution they wish to transfer to regarding CPL credit acceptance at that school.
- CPL policies are reviewed and subject to change.
- If a FHSU fee applies, the student will be charged the Advanced Standing Examination Fee of $25 per credit hour attempted.
- CPL must be approved by the faculty in the department which houses the course.
Credit for Prior Learning Hours Allowed
The maximum number of credit hours which may be obtained by CPL are based on the degree the student is registered in:
Certificate, Associate, & Bachelor’s-- 75% of degree
Master's--6 hours
Education Specialist and Doctoral--Not Allowed.
Many students will not be able to receive the maximum credits since they will have requirements that are not met by CPL credits. Students will be advised toward CPL credit that advances them to the degree.
