Portfolio Steps
The following steps outline the process. Students should be aware that a quick pace typically exceeds a semester in length.- Student contact with CPL coordinator/and possibly other faculty and staff
- CPL coordinator determines credits will apply to student’s academic goal.
- Departmental pre-approval
- The student intends a portfolio for listed courses/has relevant background.
- Student provides resume/experience summary to CPL coordinator. Department agrees the student has the possibility of success and someone will evaluate.
- Student starts UNIV 099 (1 hour tuition assessed)
- Outcomes to demonstrate are assigned
- For a regular class - a current (or recent) syllabi (must list outcomes) is provided.
- For a variable class - outcomes are agreed upon between the student, CPL coordinator, and department. [Previous outcomes have started from external training, syllabi at other schools, or custom developed.]
- Student continues UNIV 099 to develop the portfolio – Must be an archivable argument demonstrating the student meets the outcomes and how they came to do so. Officially, UNIV 099 requires submission of a first draft of the portfolio.
- The CPL coordinator will provide feedback for edits to the draft.
- Student edits portfolio and returns to CPL coordinator. MULTIPLE DRAFTS (steps 6&7) MAY BE REQUIRED for CPL coordinator approval to submit.
- CPL coordinator enters the portfolio for evaluation (Submission)
- The student pays the appropriate CPL Evaluation fee
- Portfolio evaluation (Evaluator must have portfolio evaluation training)
- Evaluation results:
- Pass for requested credit
- Pass with alternative credit assigned
- Fail
- Evaluator may assign an interim result: Defer for question.
- Students will be told what the question(s) are and given a chance to respond or revise the portfolio as appropriate.
- Question(s) prompting a defer should be relatively simple to respond to, yet important to the evaluation outcome. Question(s) requiring significant additional work or a major revision of the portfolio should result in a Fail.
- If the result is fail, the student may elect to rework and resubmit one time (additional evaluation fee required).
- Students have an option to appeal.
- Evaluation results:
- If the evaluator recommends credit, the recommendation is reviewed by the relevant chair, dean, and Assistant Provost for academic affairs. Graduate credit also requires graduate school review.
- Courses and hours awarded are added to the academic record.
