English at FHSU: Real World Experience
Our courses will give you a solid foundation in writing, language, and literature. You'll also have opportunities to develop personally and professionally outside of the classroom.
Gain Experience Through an Internship
Enhance your education with real world practice.
Promote growing industries like agritourism and craft brewing. Develop marketing materials for non-profit organizations. Manage public relations for an arts organization. An internship is like an audition for a stage of your career. You'll make important connections-and may even land a future job offer. Our students have interned at:
- The Arc of Central Plains
- Big Brothers Big Sisters
- Ellis County Historical Society
- FHSU Office of University Relations
- Hays Area Convention and Visitors Bureau
- Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science (KAMS)
- Prep2Prep
- Sunflower Electric
- Willa Cather Newsletter and Review
The earlier you explore your internship options, the more time you'll have to choose the ones that are right for you.
Write and Edit Beyond the Classroom
Are you ready to make every word count? Our students have written and edited for a number of publications, including:
- FHSU Magazine
- Hays Daily News
- Hometown Memories Publishing
- Kansas English
- Post Parade, our department's alumni newsletter
- Tiger Media Network
Lines from the Middle of Nowhere, our literary and arts journal, gives you the chance to experience the publication process on a smaller scale. Any current student can sit on the editorial board.
Learn Through Service
Many of our students complete service-learning projects. Some have:
- Written newspaper articles for CASA and the Foster Grandparents program
- Conducted and transcribed oral history interviews of Ellis County residents
- Written scripts for Smoky Hills Public Television's on-air auction
Tailor a project to your personal and professional interests.
Travel and Learn
Deepen your understanding of literature and culture by going on a trip with English Programs. Recently, students have gone to England and Ireland, where they saw the ruins of Tintern Abbey, Jane Austen's home in Bath, literary Dublin, and the Book of Kells. Others have traveled in-country to places such as Willa Cather's childhood home in Red Cloud, Nebraska.
