Summer Institute 2019: GIS and Mapping in the Classroom
The Kansas Geographic Alliance (KGA) will be hosting a summer geography institute emphasizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Monday, July 22nd to Friday, July 26th at Fort Hays State University, Hays, KS.
This institute will provide geography and social studies teaching instruction in:
- Basic GIS operations
- Cartography using GIS
- Introduction and application of ESRI’s Story Map
- Pedagogical methods for utilizing GIS maps and ESRI Story Map in the classroom
- Participants successfully completing the institute will receive a $400 stipend
In addition, participants will create and produce GIS instructional videos to educate other colleagues and/or be used in classrooms.
The institute objectives are to cover the basic operations of ArcMap utilizing existing GIS internet resources, creation of maps with GIS and ESRI Story Maps, and understanding of basic cartography design principles. Participating teachers will learn how to integrate GIS mapping into individual course curriculum, methods of utilizing Story Maps as learning resources, and will received guided assistance in creation of lesson plans that use GIS and Story Maps to address Kansas standards in Geography/Social Studies.
National Geographic Foundation grant and KGA support funding is available for up to 15 middle school teachers. Support funding will cover institute expenses such as on-site trip transportation, lodging, and food. At this time number of participants will be limited to the 15 funded spots.

ESRI 2018-2019 ArcGIS Online Competition
The Kansas Geographic Alliance is proud to be the state leadership team in Kansas for the 2019 ESRI ArcGIS Online Competition.
Esri's 2019 ArcGIS U.S. School Competition is open to high school and middle school students in the U.S. who can analyze, interpret, and present data via an ArcGIS web app or story map. ESRI sponsors each approved state competition with 10 prizes of $100 each for the five best High School and five best Middle School projects in the state. Kansas will submit the 10 best (5 High School, 5 Middle School) projects for national judging with the final prize being a trip to the 2019 ESRI Education Conference in San Diego, CA.

2019 PAST EVENTS
2019 P4 Institute: Plants, People, Places, Patterns Institute

A five day summer institute for K-12 teachers that will emphasize the importance of the natural environment, ecosystems for Kansans, and for the economy of the state. The institute activities will target agriculture science, environmental science, social studies, geography, and biology. It is encouraged that two teachers from a school or district to apply together (e.g., 1 social studies and 1 science teacher).
Major topics that the institute will address include: the natural vegetation and climatic patterns of Kansas, the biology and geography of grasslands and ranching, the biology and geography of wheat, corn, sorghum and other agricultural crops, the importance of vegetative resources in influencing settlement patterns, an examination of how aspects of the natural environment are built into our cultural fabric, the services that humans obtain from ecosystems, and how human activities related to our ecological culture have changed over the years. Institute activities will include two field experiences with an emphasis on observing biological diversity in Kansas.

Teacher Responsibilities and Expectations:
Teacher participants are expected to attend the one week workshop at Fort Hays State University from Monday, June 3 to Friday, June 7, 2019. Lodging, breakfast, lunches, and two dinners will be provided for all participants during their stay in Hays, Kansas. Teacher participants must provide their own transportation to Hays as well as covering their other dinners.
