Frequently Asked Questions
Listed below are some of the most commonly asked questions about our counseling services. Please contact our office if you have concerns that are not addressed in this list.
Are there charges for services?
Registered students, faculty and staff may receive counseling sessions free of charge. There may be some charges associated with drug and alcohol counseling if it is part of a legal proceeding.
I'm not doing too bad. At what point should I make an appointment?
We recommend making an appointment before issues lead to poor grades, strained relationships, increased stress, or other challenges. If issues do begin to affect your daily functioning, an appointment may provide an outlet for you as well as provide other resources.
Do I have to make an appointment?
Scheduling ahead allows you the best opportunity to choose a day and time that works for you. Same day appointments are not always available. Crisis issues will be assessed and care will be provided as soon as possible.
Who will I see at my appointment?
You will see a licensed professional or a supervised intern. All staff will take your concerns seriously. We provide a nonjudgmental, empathetic place for you to share your concerns and work toward your goals.
What can I expect during my first session?
Before you visit with your counselor, you will complete informational forms to help us learn more about your needs. You will then have time during the first session to address your areas of concern. The clinician will ask additional questions in order to get a better understanding of your concern.
How long are sessions?
Sessions are typically 45 minutes in length. Staff will work with your class schedule.
What happens if I'm late?
Without advance warning, the session will be considered canceled after 15 minutes. Sessions can be rescheduled for another day.
How private and confidential are therapy sessions?
Information shared during therapy is held in strict confidence. Information cannot be released to anyone (including your family or parents) without your written permission. See our information on confidentiality and privacy for the few exceptions and additional information.
Can you tell me whether or not my family member is using or has contacted Health and Wellness Services?
We understand that you are very concerned about the welfare of your family member. However, we adhere to the strictest standards of confidentiality. We do not provide information to anyone (including family and parents) regarding a client's visit to our office, participation in services, scheduled appointments, or contact with Health and Wellness Services without the client's written permission. See our information on confidentiality and privacy for the few exceptions and additional information. Visit our Family and Parent page for information on supporting your loved one.
Who goes to Health and Wellness Services for counseling?
Students, faculty, and staff needing help with substance abuse, eating issues, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, adjustment issues, relationship problems, grief, accessibility, academic concerns, and learning issues utilize our services. Some people just need a place to vent.
Do you provide couples counseling?
Yes. We can provide a safe environment in which couples can benefit from counseling. Couples therapy can address a variety of concerns but is not specifically for premarital counseling. Couples counseling may be provided as long as one member of the couple is a registered FHSU student or a member of our faculty or staff.
Does your office provide legal advice or help in child custody evaluations?
We do not provide legal advice, but we have a number of resources available.
Can I get medication at Health and Wellness Services?
No medication is given out by our counseling staff. However, we do provide referrals to our onsite medical professionals and other health care providers when needed.
