Maintaining Immigration Status
It is important and expected to maintain immigration status as it relates to a student’s purpose to be in the United States. The issuance of a visa is based on the intended reason to travel and be present in the United States. It is the student’s responsibility to follow the regulations as they pertain to each visa type. F-1 students’ primary purpose is to study in an academic setting.
The International Student Services Office is here to support and guide students with legal requirements as a student at Fort Hays State University. Contact the International Student Services Office BEFORE making changes, which could impact a student's immigration status.
HOW TO MAINTAIN IMMIGRATION STATUS:
- Enter the U.S. no more than 30 days before your program of study begins.
- Notify the International Student Services Office of your entry to the U.S. no later than the program start date identified on your I20.
- Register, attend, and pass all your courses achieving academic progress.
- Register in a full-time course of study each semester (except summer session which is open registration)
- Full time registration each semester
- Based on federal statue {8C.F.R 214.2 (f)(6)}, international students are required to register in a full-time course of study during the academic year (Fall and Spring semesters). Full-time study is 9 credit hours for graduate students and 12 credit hours for undergraduate students.
