Dr. Brungardt is actively involved in many community projects throughout Ellis County. She serves as the director of the Kansas Women's Leadership Conference and the associated statewide community service project. She served as a Fellow for the FHSU Center for Civic Leadership and directed the Women's Leadership Project.
In 2009, Christie and her husband, Dr. Curt Brungardt, created the non-profit organization Jana's Campaign to honor their daughter, who lost her life the year before. This prevention and education program is aimed specifically at reduced at gender-based violence. http://www.janascampaign.org/.
Christie publishes and presents in the fields of civic engagement, leadership development, and gender issues in leadership. In the spring of 2004, she received the University's Outstanding Service Award. She has twice been a finalist for the Pilot Award, the University's outstanding teaching award. And in 2008, she received the University's Edmund Shearer Adviser of the Year Award. In 2011 Christie and Curt were selected by the Kansas Attorney General to receive the Kansas Crime Victim's State Champion Award. In 2013 Christie and Curt were recognized as the Kansas State University College of Education's annual Alumni Fellows. In 2014 Christie was selected as one of Ingram's Publishing's "50 Kansans You Should Know" recognition.
