Compliance and Policies
Fostering responsible and ethical conduct of research is a critical component in the advancement of knowledge through research. FHSU is committed to adhering to high standards of ethics, integrity and responsibility in our research activities. Research compliance policies and guidelines ensure that FHSU students, faculty and staff conduct responsible, ethical research and follow regulations for human and animal subjects.
Research compliance activities are intended to ensure that research conforms to federal and state laws and institutional policies. Given that ethical issues emerge when conducting research and scholarship across disciplines of all kinds, FHSU is committed to providing high quality instruction in responsible conduct of research to the entire campus community.
Why is it important to follow these rules?Research compliance guidelines and policies help to create an environment that promotes responsible research by embracing standards of excellence, integrity, and lawfulness. The public expects that our research will be conducted in an objective and honest way. The development of knowledge through research and its dissemination is one way we achieve our public mission. Research conducted according to the accepted standards of the disciplines must be ethical and honest if we are to keep the trust of the public. Research compliance policies and activities are critical for maintaining public trust in the research enterprise.
The Department of Health and Human Services and the Federal Drug Administration regulate research involving human subjects, and the USDA and National Institutes of Health regulate animal care and research. Federal agencies such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Science Foundation (NSF), and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) require research compliance training and oversight as a condition for funding.
